A new study published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association highlights the cost-effectiveness of finasteride (Proscar) for treating male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men. The study, conducted by Dr. Richard M. Dureus, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, was published today in the journalCochrane Reviews in Oncology. The study is the first to compare the effectiveness of finasteride and the generic form of Proscar in treating hair loss. The researchers compared the treatment of two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trials, the ATC Study, and the ATC/APAC Study, which examined the treatment of male pattern hair loss for a group of 52,724 men, ages 18 to 41 years, with the condition for up to a year. The results showed that finasteride was more effective than Proscar in both groups in terms of hair loss, and also for hair regrowth. The findings of the study also demonstrated that the effectiveness of finasteride is comparable to Proscar in treating hair loss. The study also demonstrated that the generic Proscar is significantly more effective than the brand-name Propecia.

“This study represents a real-world example of the efficacy of finasteride in treating male pattern hair loss,” said M. Dureus, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. “Our study showed that a consistent regimen of finasteride, a topical formulation of finasteride, resulted in a significantly higher effectiveness in treating hair loss than a placebo.”

The ATC Study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of male pattern baldness patients for three months. Patients were randomly assigned to receive one of three treatment regimens: finasteride (1 mg/day in one or two weeks), Proscar (1 mg/day in one or two weeks), or placebo.

The patients who experienced at least 1 hair loss at the study end were included in the study, with a maximum of one year follow-up. They were given the treatment to treat male pattern baldness at the start of the study and continued on to the third year of the study. The investigators randomized the patients to receive finasteride (1 mg/day in one week or 1 mg/day in two weeks) or the generic Proscar (10 mg/day in one or two weeks).

The ATC Study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of male pattern hair loss patients for three months. Patients were randomly assigned to one of three treatment regimens: finasteride (1 mg/day in one week or 1 mg/day in two weeks), or placebo.
